CHEF DELVEN ADAMS

The Chef Delven Adams has a long history in gastronomy, like all guyanese his learning about cooking began at home with his mother and family members.

At a certain point, the chef moved with his family to the United States, where, through his brother's contacts, he began preparing meals of traditional guyanese food.

This grew to the point where the chef began planning to open a restaurant or a food truck to expand his business work and being able to meet the demands of his customers, however opening a business in the United States ended up being something complicated and would take a lot of time and energy, so the chef began to evaluate other options and thought about going to Europe to do a backpaking for a period of time and learn about farming, during this period his brother invited him to spend a time with him in Guyana, and on this travel the process of creating the backyard café began.

After a period in Guyana chef Delven returned to the United States, taking the idea to his family. to open this enterprise in Guyana, which was not an easy task at first, but after considering the matter, everyone agreed to return to Guyana and start this enterprise in the backyard of the house where the chef spent his childhood, at first they only made one pot dishe per day and so the backyard cafe started to grow.

This is just a small summary of the history of Backyard Café there is many others details that led to the creation of this enterprise, which today is a true symbol of guyanese national cuisine, a mandatory stop for travelers in Georgetown , the incredible immersion in traditional Guinean cuisine made the backyard café gain international fame hosting renowned chefs, dignitaries and travellers and participation in several videos and travel series on different online platforms.

The Guyanese Cuisine

We asked the chef about guyanese cuisine, the origins and how food is integrated into the culture and identity of the guyanese people, and it really caught my attention how the history of ancestral cuisine is interconnected and vast and how our African people managed to maintain their gastronomic traditions even with all the difficulties of colonialism and slavery, and how our ancestors created wonderful dishes with so little they had in the so-called "world new"
